Today, the Endangered collection was unveiled. I would like to write about the behind-the-scenes story of the creation of the Coral Carving Earrings, which are made using vintage coral carvings.
At Jewellery Wanderlust, we actively use gemstones that have been used in jewelry in the past but have outlived their usefulness, so-called "removed stones."
Such "removed stones" always carry the risk of the stone cracking when removing it from the old fitting.
Any stone is at risk, but the risk is especially high for stones with low hardness.
The hardness of coral, which is an organic matter, is 3.5. Compared to the hardest mineral, diamond, which is 10, you can see that it is very soft. Of course, being soft is not necessarily a bad thing, and it is precisely because of its softness that coral can be carved delicately.
In the process of making Jewellrry Wanderlust items, some coral carvings actually broke and were scrapped (sigh).
Coral carvings are less common these days because they are more prone to breaking or chipping than other gemstones, but they have long been beloved in Japan.
At Jewellery Wanderlust, we arrange carvings to suit modern times and deliver them to you. Check out the "Endangered" collection here .
