According to the Global Gender Gap Report 2025, Japan ranked 118th out of 148 countries, unchanged from the previous year. Since the index was first published in 2006, Japan's overall score has remained largely stagnant, while its ranking has gradually declined as other countries continue to make progress toward gender equality.
Of course, no country has yet achieved complete gender equality. Unequal caregiving responsibilities, pay gaps, harassment, and many other challenges continue to affect women around the world.
International Women's Day is an opportunity to stand in solidarity with women everywhere—to remember that none of us stands alone, and to reflect on how we can help create a more equitable future.
We hope this occasion offers a moment, even amid the busyness of everyday life, to pause and think about the kind of world we wish to build for ourselves and for the girls who will come after us.
