Collection: Kakkomi

A unique transparency created by a disappearing technique.

When processing rough gemstones into jewellery, there is a process of splitting large rough stones into smaller pieces. In Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture, the centre of Japan's jewellery industry, this process is not carried out by machine, but by hand by craftsmen using chisels and other tools, in a process known as kakkomi.

Usually, gemstones are further faceted before being transformed into sparkling loose stones, but we made jewellery with the 'kakkomi' stones keeping its rough charm.

'Kakkomi', which has traditionally been carried out by craftsmen, is nowadays rarely seen. The icy transparency created by such craftsmanship is presented here.
